While working in TV Production at ABS-CBN, he found time to study again to continuously hone his skills and talents in filmmaking when he enrolled and graduated at Asia Pacific Film Institute with the course Motion Picture Production Program on 2010-2011.
From there, different short films were produced under his belt:
He is the writer of the short film Silakbo shown in Robinson’s Galleria last 2009.
He is the writer-director of the short film Motion Picture, a finalist in 7th Art Film Festival in 2010.
He is also the director of one of the viral videos of passion of Levi’s Roadwear in 2011 featuring Nicole Wuthrich.
His four-series short documentary films entitled Stewards, Tactics, Starfish, and Pledge competed in Possible Futures Film Contest at San Francisco, California in 2011, which caught the attention of Red Carpet, an entertainment magazine of Asian Journal (community newspaper in the U.S.) and named him as “Inspirational Pinoy Visionary Artist.”
He won Best Director for his short film Viscera (film thesis in Asia Pacific Film Institute) in the 8th Art Film Festival among the 10 finalists nationwide. The said film was also screened at Ika-23 Gawad CCP Para sa Alternatibong Pelikula at Vidyo in 2011.
Viscera also competed at the Indie Un-Film 2012 Feature Category held at De La Salle University-Manila and won again for Best Director and also Best Screenplay.
“In Viscera by Herwin Cabasal is a film where a cop questions and tortures someone tied to a chair. Children are going missing, turning up without their internal organs, and the suspect claims to know nothing about it. Intense and literally nauseating, this film again re-imagines the aswang myth but with Hostel-style violence and gore.” -Spot.PH
Currently, he shows hi short film Resurreccion (O Kung Paano Naging Bayani si Pepe sa Panahon ng Twitter) to different schools in Bulacan as an advocacy film made by HYLEAP in association with APFi, PrimePraxis, and 18th SFC. This is about Jose Rizal has been resurrected in the modern era for one day still believing that the youth is the hope of the fatherland so he posts in Twitter that cause the rebellious youth to abduct him and force him to delete his tweet. Starring the actor of the youth Mr. Jao Mapa as Jose Rizal together with Hermes Bautista of Pinoy Big Brother and Joel Ferrer and Amarie Tolentino.
His latest short film, Pieta (O Kung Bakit Nagluluksa si Luzviminda sa Kapalaran ni Juan dela Cruz) was chosen as one of the Top 10 Finalists at Active Vista Human Rights Film Festival 2012 Special Youth Section, and a director’s cut of the same film also competed in UP Cineastes’ Haute Auteur Silent Video Competition 2013.
