Likhang Mulat as a Film Movement

Every year, I look forward to this human rights film festival that humbly started as a Visual Communication Exhibition in the pre-pandemic times, 2019, organized by VisCom sections that I handled.

It gradually evolved into online editions until it turned into a film festival that champions a movement for human rights education and social advocacies.

Serving as its Festival Director, this film event was also a result of my excellent education in Motion Picture Production from the Asia Pacific Film Institute and Media Studies at the UP Film Institute.

Personally, as a media scholar, teacher, and Chair of the FEU IAS Department of Communication, this is my way of contributing to the Alternative Cinema Movement which I owe to my mentor Prof. Nick Deocampo, a film historian.

The festival draws inspiration from my MA thesis about Social Advocacy Cinema, which won Best Thesis, at UP College of Mass Communication.

More than a cultural expression, we see Film that serves as a potent tool for a movement, particularly advocating for social causes.

Through the festival, we pay homage to the various film movements that emerged in the history of World Cinema, mostly a resistance to the hegemonic form of filmmaking.

I give thanks to our Communication students (both alumni and current), teachers, and partners who extended their full participation and support to make our film culture more vibrant “in thy happy halls”!

I am eternally grateful to Far Eastern University, my beloved, for trusting me in building these platforms to advocate for alternative cinema.

We present to you, FEU Film Movements Festival, the producers of Likhang Mulat Cinema!

We film. We move.
