Random Thoughts after watching Mikhail Red’s BIRDSHOT and How I can allegorize it to DUTERTOPIA

Birdshot

1. Because of Birdshot, I remember Louis Althusser’s concept of Repressive State Apparatus by controlling the people in society through the use of violence (does it sound familiar today?).

2. Because of Birdshot, I remember Michel Foucault’s 1975 book “Discipline and Punish: The Birth of the Prison” where his theories in torture, punishment, discipline, and prison were remarkably discussed.

3. Because of Birdshot, I remember Jeremy Bentham’s panopticon that gave birth to the idea of “Big Brother is watching you” wherever you are to disperse discipline to those who commit crime (and that includes shooting an important type of bird in a sanctuary).

4. Because of Birdshot, I remember Antonio Gramsci and his idea of hegemony most especially in moral domination of those in power (or how those in power could be selective of which case must be prioritized, and which one can be ignored).

5. Because of Birdshot, I remember how (Marxist) proletarians could be blindfolded and muted if they attempted to see and speak against oppression by the ruling class.

6. Because of Birdshot, I see how the Hitler-like administration could be inhumane to its citizens but more humane to animals (if the animals you think also wear suits and tie).

7. Because of Birdshot, I see how the fascist government could be interested in bird shooting. But they are more interested in shooting innocent people.

8. Because of Birdshot, I envy how eagles could soar higher in the sky while our nation crawls like worms in crime and poverty.

9. Because of Birdshot, I see how we can be weak eaglets in the beginning but we eventually turn into strong eagles, or vice versa.

10. Because of Birdshot, I tend to ask myself: In case you need to choose, which is more significant? Life of an eagle or faith in humanity? I should have already known the answer but the film makes you doubt what this country is really for.
