2021: Season of Thriving and Growing despite the COVID-19 Pandemic

It’s a wrap for 2021!

Every last day of the year, it’s been my personal tradition to list down my winning moments and milestones in life.

This is my way of looking back so I can have a heart full of gratitude for the journey that I took despite the challenges that I also encountered.

The year 2021 has been a season of thriving and growing amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Plenty of reasons to be thankful for:

  • Started the year 2021 by moderating one of the FARE Film Screenings at Far Eastern University.
  • Taught alternative cinema as Special Topics in FEU Department of Communication.
  • Likhang Mulat’s Visual Communication Exhibit (MULAT 2.0: Visual Expressions of Quarantine) won Excellence Award from the 8th Student Quill Awards by the International Association of Business Communicators Philippines.
  • Served as Head of Publicity and Promotions Committee of the 2021 International Southeast Asian Media Studies Virtual Conference.
  • Opened a mutual funds account in Sun Life.
  • Presented a paper on Stories from the Margins at the 2021 International Southeast Asian Media Studies Virtual Conference.
  • Likhang Mulat was featured by Business Mirror and other publications.
  • Presented a paper on Quarantine Cinema at the 2021 Communication and Media Studies Conference, organized by the Philippine Association of Communication Educators (PACE).
  • Elected as Public Relations Director of the Southeast Asian Media Studies Association (SEAMSA).
  • Research article on Social Advocacy Cinema was published by Plaridel: A Philippine Journal on Communication, Media, and Society.
  • Taught post-production course in Polytechnic University of the Philippines College of Communication.
  • Delivered a public talk on Social Advocacy Cinema at CONTEND Capsule Critiques, organized by Congress of Teachers/Educators for Nationalism and Democracy.
  • Moved in at my new condominium unit at Urban Deca Homes Manila.
  • Presented a paper on Marxism and Social Advocacy Cinema at the International Conference on Film Studies: The Anatomy of Cinematic Identities, organized by the London Centre for Interdisciplinary Research (LCIR).
  • Delivered a talk on alternative cinema at De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde.
  • Fully vaccinated, a protection against COVID-19. Everyone in the family is healthy.
  • Served as Assistant Editor of Southeast Asian Media Studies Journal (SEAMSJ).
  • Received my black beret which signifies that I am an alumnus of University of the Philippines Film Institute.
  • The thesis titled “Social Advocacy Cinema: Progressive and Political Filmmaking of Alternative Multimedia Collectives from 2000 to 2019” was awarded BEST MA THESIS by the University of the Philippines Diliman College of Mass Communication for the Class 2020.
  • Moderated A Dictator’s Guide to Cinema: A History of Philippine Cinema during Martial Law, organized by FEU Film Society.
  • Appointed as Chair of FEU Department of Communication.
  • Nominated as one of the Board of Trustees of PACE (Philippine Association of Communication Educators).
  • Competed for Paper Presentation (Faculty Category) at the National Communication Research Conference (NCRC) 2021, organized by UP CMC Department of Communication Research.
  • Moderated a parallel session at NCRC 2021.
  • FEU SCREEN was launched by the FEU Department of Communication.
  • Beyond the Screen (Dokyu-Totoo) was conducted, the first departmental activity under FEU SCREEN.
  • Undergraduate theses were defended by my advisees from BA in Communication, FEU.
  • Nominated as one of the Board of Trustees of PACMRI (Philippine Association for Communication and Media Research, Inc.).
  • Research article on Quarantine Cinema was published by PCS Review, an academic journal of Philippines Communication Society.
  • Likhang Mulat Film Movements Festival 2021 was conducted with the theme on human rights, partnered with other sponsoring organizations.
  • Research article on Stories from the Margins was published by Pelikula: A Journal on Philippine Cinema.
  • Condominium unit in Urban Deca Homes Manila is now open for staycation, my way of venturing into a business.
  • Ended the year 2021 by moderating a parallel session at the 2021 ANPOR-APCA Annual Conference.

Thank you Lord Almighty for this season of thriving and growing in the year 2021 despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

Looking forward to a braver and more abundant 2022! Claiming for a world that is healed from this public health crisis; a nation that elects principled and progressive leaders; excellence in everything that I do; and travel opportunities.
